Scenic Cellars

So tonight I went to Scenic Cellars Red Wine tasting event, now I don’t want you thinking that your favorite blogger is a big drinker, I aren’t.

However, good wine is like all things good, they should be appreciated!

So the Scenic Cellars is as the name suggests a wine cellar, with fantastic views, with tens of thousands of wines to tempt every palate and budget. What is so unique about the cellars is the underground experience, a staircase leads you down to a number of spaces, deep in the Taupo sub soil, it is here that you can truly appreciate the number and variety of wines.

Anyway getting back to the wine tasting, every month Scenic Cellars hosts an evening like this one, it is small and intimate group of about 30-40 people and with over 150 wines, teasing and tempting their palates with some extraordinary treats. And you don’t have to be a wine connoisseur to be there, I talked to a number of people that enjoy a nice wine, and tonight was seen as an opportunity to enlarge their knowledge, (at no risk). To the serious wine tasters who sniff, swirl and spit!

So TravelMonkee highly recommends the Scenic Cellars next time you travel to Lake Taupo, it is experience shopping at the best, but hey can’t wait to get to Taupo Scenic have one of the most comprehensive online shops, http://www.sceniccellars.co.nz/ where you can get that special wine. PS. after testing you get to take some of the wines home with you…I got the Frizzell! http://www.frizzellwines.co.nz/index.html

Hilton Lake Taupo

This week was very exciting, as I got a personal tour of the Hilton, by the Hotel Manager Clinton Farley .

The Hilton has joined forces with Taupo’s most historic Hotel the Terraces and is located on the Napier Taupo Highway.  The hotel is one of the Hilton chain, and as expected it is stunning from the outside and inside. With over 100 rooms, the Hilton delivers on style and  excellence. the guests are treated to rooms that are luxurious and well equipped, the tones are earthy and relaxing, the beds very comfortable, and bathrooms spacious.

Facilities include Restaurant, Bar, Gym, Lap pool, sauna and undercover secure parking.

So the rates as you expect are in keeping with the Hotel, but keep an eye open because there are specials, and if you plan your wedding at the Hilton Lake Taupo, you can book out the whole Heritage wing, (the original Terraces)

So what else do you need, Wi-fi yes, concierge yes, Conference yes, so the Hilton gets the big yes from Travelmonkee, I know you will love it!

So if you are on Holiday and want to get away, check out the http://www1.hilton.com/en_US/hi/hotel/AKLLTHI-Hilton-Lake-Taupo/index.do

Kiwi Bikes Rotorua

Those of you who are my regular readers will know that I love cycling, http://travelmonkee.co.nz/?p=337 http://travelmonkee.co.nz/?p=229 not only do I believe that it is good for the mind body and soul, I also think that biking has a very cool community, just show up anywhere and you find someone that is willing to help you out, give you advice or just “chew the fat”.

Now it is hard to go to Rotorua, or lake Taupo, and not see bikes, either mountain, or road, both towns have magic single trail mountain bike tracks, and so there is a great need for the servicing of bikes. So it was very cool when I happened upon www.kiwibikes.co.nz based in Rotorua, while on my travels.

Check out eh custome 36er, is this the future of bikes?

These guys build seriously great bikes, and can get you up and running in no time, if you have the misfortune of a break down while on holiday in Rotorua.

Added to that they are right next door to Zippys Cafe, where all hard core bikers go!

How to make the most out of your trip

So you have spent weeks, no months or even years planning your holiday, you have done all you can to make sure that you have done everything possible to make it a trip of a lifetime, or at least stress free!

An unbeatable twilight sunset @ lake Taupo

An unbeatable twilight sunset @ lake Taupo

The last thing we want is a travel disaster, I have met people that have had their trip wrecked because they lost their passports, or dropped the itinerary, or at worst got sick and have insufficient insurance.

So travelMonkee has a list of all things you should cover before you head off in to the wild blue yonder.

  1. Spend time and make sure that all you flights and accommodation bookings are on the right days, often times you are traveling to another time zone, this can make the dates confusing, esp if you are crossing multiple time zones.
  2. Check that your name is correct on the tickets, and that your passports are up to date, if you are recently married, you find that you want to travel on your married name, but your Passport is in your maiden name.
  3. It is easy in this day and age to rely on the internet for all our information about a region we are travelling to, this has been a boon for the modern traveller, however there is nothing quiet like the experience of someone that has travelled there. Their experience will be invaluable for you, often times the guides only highlight the main attractions, whereas you might just pick up a tip on a secluded location that will wow you.
  4. I know it is tedious but make sure your insurance covers you for most eventualities, a broken leg may put a damper on holiday, but a serious incident or illness may cost you tens of thousands.
  5. Ask the locals, get off the beaten track, where you are staying ask your hosts, the thing you must see in that area, often times these places are free, and it will give you that something special to tell your friends about.
  6. Be sure to keep your documents secure, if there is a safe in the accommodation you are staying at be sure to use it, if you have to leave your car parked in a remote location, take your documents and money with you, or leave them with someone you can trust, i.e. if you are going white water rafting, check if you can leave your information with the reception.
  7. Back up your photos, there are plenty of online storage facilities to load your photos onto, make sure you use them, you can replace that lovely digital camera, but not the photos that you had on the memory sticks.

Well that is enough to start with, please feel free to add anything that you think is crucial to achieving a trip of a lifetime!
