Keeping safe when you travel part 1: Vehicles

Traveling is fun, there is also a sense of risk and danger, most of the time we will have stories of close calls, getting on the wrong bus, or having to deal with a delayed or cancelled flight.

You should be aware that to be safe in any country when you travel you should take some precautions, that doesn’t mean that you wrap your self up in cotton wool, no you should get out there and enjoy the country and culture that is around you, however by taking a few simple precautions.

In this first part we will look at vehicles

Looking after your vehicle

A car parked with luggage displayed is a tempting target

  • Leaving your luggage in plan view is a tempting target
  • Leaving your car parked in an obscure location, remember most rental vehicles are readily identifiable, therefore a target.
  • If you have to leave your goods in your car, lock them in the boot, and make the car look as empty as you possibly can.
  • Thieves like easy targets, the last thing that they want is to have to break into the car, then have to rummage through the vehicle to find any valuables. More than likely they will leave your car alone and go to easier pickings
  • Never ever leave your personal documents in the car, take them with, and if you are doing activities ask your guides/hosts to store your documents until you return
  • When you are driving it pays to be aware of the road rules, in New Zealand we have a a few funny rules, so be aware of those before heading off.
  • And although most Kiwis are laid back, people don’t like been held up, so while you are enjoying the scenery of this great country, remember to allow people past you, pull over if you must, then everyone will be happy.
