Lake Taupo Events capital of New Zealand

Lake Taupo is centrally located in the middle of the North Island New Zealand, this makes it an idea spot for many events/sports and conferences. Just this month Lake Taupo was host to the 32nd running of the Cycle Challenge,http://www.cyclechallenge.com/ this is a race where riders complete a circuit of the Lake’s 160 kilometres. There are many categories, but most popular is the solo ride. With over 11,000 riders entering the event now has become the largest single sports meet in New Zealand. This year I rode in it for the first time and as I had a rathe rlarge crash a few months back, (you can read that here http://www.sportsfanattic.co.nz/grassroots/article/187 )  I decided to ride in the two person relay event. I rode the first 80 K’s which is rather hilly in places, but I was able to ride with some other riders that were about my pace, and I completed my leg in 2.40 (unofficially.) But there is so much more than the main race, this year a open womens and mens criterion   race was held on Friday night, with high speed cycling around the centre of town. There was a successful attempt to ride spin bieks, more than 700 k’s in 24 hours. And for the family there is the heart childrens ride on Sunday morning, with more than 900 kids and parents rode their bikes along the lake front to raise money for Heart Children  you can donate here http://www.heartchildren.org.nz/ Once again the event went with out a hitch, a testament to the organizers and the army of volunteers, that make it all happen.

Family things to do in Lake Taupo Honey Hive

On the road north of Lake Taupo, just past the World Famous Huka Falls, is the Honey Hive, this is a working bee factory, with a difference. Here not only can you see a real hive working through a glass case, you can also interact and learn a great deal about the humble honey bee. Not only that, there is a large store, in which you can buy all things honey: from different blends of honey to meads to ice creams, the list is amazing. Here is a great place with free entry and there is something for all the family to learn from, well worth checking out. And located on the same premises is the Rock ‘n’ ropes complex.
