Lake Taupo Huka Falls

This is one of my favourite spots in Taupo, it is free entry and you can get there by driving or walking from spa park.  Located just a few minutes north of Lake Taupo are the mighty Huka falls, the falls are the first major obstacle on the Waikato River, as the water is forced into a tiny chasm of just 20 metres wide, and then plummets some 20 metres into a large foaming pool.

Around 220,000 litres per second of pours over the cliff face, as the river heads north. There are ample picture opportunities to be had here, with a bridge spanning the gorge in its narrowest place, then a walk way that leads to great vantage points to view the falls and the pool beyond.

Great walks Lake Taupo Spa Park to Huka Falls

From Spa park to Huka Falls

Huka Falls Walkway

Time: 2 hours return via the same track.

This walk is a pleasant and undemanding walk the track is well maintained. Turn right off Tongariro Street into Spa Road at the northern end of Taupo, then left into County Avenue and drive into Spa Thermal Park. Following the signs, walk for five minutes across the park to the Waikato River.

At the start of the walkway, a bridge crosses a natural hot stream. The well-defined track winds along the riverbank and offers lovely views on the way. The walk finishes at the spectacular Huka Falls, where the Waikato River is confined to a deep rock channel. The river emerges with a rush at the northern end to form the falls.

This a fantastic walk for the whole family, with the reward of a hot swim at the return in the river.

This walk can be linked with the Aratiatia Rapids Walk.

Great walks in Lake Taupo look out

Lakefront Lookout

In 1961 the Taupo Lions Club built this lookout which provides visitors with an expansive view of the lake and Tongariro National Park (World Heritage Area) at the southern end of Lake Taupo.

This walk runs the entire lake front area of the Lake Taupo Township, with a cobbled path that starts above the marina and then ends at 5 mile bay, the path is about 8 kilometres long and has numerous vista points and seats to stop at and enjoy the view. The path is a shared path and if you feel inclined you can hire a push bike and pedal you way along. A little secret, there is a hot stream about 2 kilometres along the walk, a great place to soak tired feet. You can also grab a coffee and a bite to eat from the yacht hire centre.

Great Taupo walks Aratiatia dam

Time: 4 hours return via the same track

This walk can be accessed from either the Huka Falls track or drive to the Huka Falls Road and follow the signs to Huka Falls. You will find a refreshment kiosk and pay toilets are located in the car park.

The track begins across the bridge. Head left to the last viewing area over Huka Falls. At the back of the viewing area the track climbs onto the cliff tops with magnificent views of the river. It then gradually descends and continues along the river to the Aratiatia hydro dam and rapids. Try to finish the walk when the control gates are due to open (see note below). Return via this route or arrange transport from Aratiatia.

The spillway at the Aratiatia dam is opened daily at 10:00 am, 12:00 noon, 2:00 pm (winter and summer) and also 4:00 pm in summer to recreate these rapids, showing how they were before the hydro scheme harnessed the head.

Amazing walk in Taupo Tahunatara track

For father’s day this year we headed to Taupo, and decided to some of the smaller walks that around the lake, the first stop was the Tahunatara track, this is situated in Whakapio bay. After driving down a pumice track and parking beside lake Taupo, my wife, daughter and our dog set off for the walk. The track is an easy walk, as it meanders along under native foliage along the lake edge, as it is only 2 kilometres long, within 20 minutes we had reached the lake shore on the point. While there isn’t an amazing beech there, you can find some nice places to sit and watch the world slowly go by.

Once there we were greeted with the most amazing views of the lake and Mount Ruapehu. We stopped and had a small picnic took in some photos and headed off on our next walk
